The Søvengård in Grand Rapids’ West Side neighborhood is hosting its first ever: Sourgarten – A Winter Biergarten Festival honoring some impressive sour beers this Saturday, 2.18. What better day to enjoy the outdoor Biergarten than with expected temps in the mid-50’s?
The sour style of beer in all its tart, puckering, fermented, aged and funky goodness is by far my favorite kind. It has definitely made a huge impact in the American beer market in the past couple of years, more local breweries in West Michigan have been playing with this style and it has been making its way onto beer menus.
The beer lineup for this event includes national, international and Michigan local sours – including the launch of the Søvengård House Sour by the great folks at Brewery Vivant. You can can check out the full list on the Facebook event page. Below is a sampling of the sourtastic offerings:
– Vanberg & DeWulf, LambikX
– New Belgium Brewing, Le Terroir
Dry Hopped Sour
– The Bruery, Oude Tart
Flemish Style Sour Red
– Transient Artisan Ales, Foeder #2; De Chenauc
Foeder Aged American Wild Ale w/ De Chenauc grapes
– Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, La Roja
Flanders Style Sour Red
– Mikkeller, Spontanfigs
Oak Aged Fig Sou
Admission to the event is free but you do have to purchase tickets for food and beer tastings. The Sourgarten fun starts at 1pm. If you haven’t been to the Søvengård yet, this would be a great opportunity to see one of the newest and most interesting restaurants in the city that produces an ever-changing, locally sourced and seasonal menu with Scandinavian roots. Don’t forget to #GrabGR and tell me what your favorite beer is!
