Hello, my chocolate lovers, sweet tooth addicts and local lovin’ friends! Happy Friday – hope everyone has had a positive week but more importantly, have some great positives to look forward to this weekend. One that I am super pumped about is the Grand Opening of the local, chocolate boutique – Mokaya. Mokaya is located in the old Jonny B’z location (next to Lamb Bride, across from Donkey Taqueria on Wealthy St.) and this delectable company creates some serious chocolate confections.
Mokaya is run by father and son duo – Charles “Smitty” Golcyzynski and Max – Smitty being the executive chef and chocolatier and Max, the General Manager of the store. Last week during the Wealthy Street Eat.Shop.Rock event, the shop was open to offer visitors free samples of some of their chocolates. Yes, I was there and let me tell you – DELISH. I experienced first hand some divine chocolates; including some that used Michigan craft beers combined with sweet flavors like caramel and it was beyond what I expected (in the best way possible)!
Smitty has quite an impression background – for about 2o years he was the executive chef and co-owner of The Catering Company with a unique talent for creating beautiful chocolate desserts. Now, with Mokaya, Smitty’s passion and work-life have melded into quite a beautiful mixture. Read all about the company’s fruition and interesting story here.
Mokaya offers 60 plus menu items including different chocolate variations like truffles, turtles (that are in fact shaped like turtles), ice cream and sweet drinks. They also plan to incorporate local flavor like the craft brews and sourcing local eggs and herbs from organic, locally run farms like Plainsong Farm.
I’ve known Max for a little while now and I can honestly say, I have the highest confidence in what this duo can do through hard work, passion and dedication to the end result to create something special and unique for customers that hasn’t really been done yet in GR.
The Grand Opening is happening all day tomorrow – shop opens at 11am and closes at 9pm and you can read all the event details on their Facebook Page here. The shop also plans to carry merchandise and build your own chocolate and truffle boxes as well as keeping the catering spirit alive and offering unique dessert options for events (#weddingreception anyone?)!
Hope to see you at the opening tomorrow! Don’t forget to #GrabGR for all your GR adventures!
