Happy Fourth of July, GR! What better way to celebrate than with a cold, local brew in your hand? As if that wasn’t reason enough – the whole month of July, we celebrate as the 5th largest beer producing state in the country with Michigan Craft Beer Month.
How can you celebrate? As if you needed to ask! By cracking open a cold one from one of the many 200 plus brewpubs and breweries in the state that distribute their beer or by visiting some of your favorite, local breweries or discovering new ones with your closest, beer loving friends. This month would be a perfect time to pick yourself up a Beer City Brewsader Passport and visit any of the 8 out of 23 breweries on the Beer City Ale Trail and get yourself a fancy, new t-shirt (since you’re going to be venturing to them anyways)!
The Michigan Brewers Guild is an amazing resource to find Michigan Breweries, upcoming events sponsored by the MBG and (fun fact) the organization is supported by breweries and enthusiasts – straight from the source – so you can feel good about that! Check their site out for some beer lovin’ resources.
Another way to experience multiple breweries – without the hassle or dangers of driving – is Grand Rapids Beer Tours. I enjoyed the first Cider & Mead private tour through GR Beer Tours this May as part of my bachelorette party. Not only was this a fantastic way to try out new places (People’s Cider Co. & Arktos Meadery) and discover new brews but I learned a lot about the processes and methods behind what we were tasting and had the opportunity to meet staff and in some cases the brewmaster. Brian – the owner and one of the tour guides (ours for the bachelorette day) – was very helpful throughout the booking process and was wonderful chatting with during the tour. Check out their full list of beer tours and contact Brian and the GR Beer Tours crew with any questions you may have!
A couple big, beer events happening in the Mitten this month:
- Grand Rapids Clips Beers and Film Tour at Ah-Nab-Awen Park 7/15 – This free event sponsored by Colorado based brewing company, New Belgium Brewing is a traveling, beer and film festival that (on its stop in GR) is benefiting 100% of the proceeds from beer tokens to the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition! You’ll get to try up to 19 varieties from New Belgium and pair them with inspiring short films. Beer tokens cost $1.50 for a three-ounce pour and $6 for a 12-ounce beer and you can purchase at event.
- 2016 Summer Beer Festival in Ypsilanti, MI 7/22 to 7/23- Sponsored by Michigan Brewers Guild, in its 19th year, the festival brings more than 100 Michigan brewery samples and live music (similar to the Winter beer fest). Saturday is sold out but you can still purchase tickets for Friday!
