I’m sure by this point you know how much I appreciate craft beer and the wonderful local group, Girls Pint Out Grand Rapids – who celebrates women enjoying the wealth of Beer City, USA together. Even though the group has only been holding meetings and events since late last Fall, these ladies are making headway and expanding rapidly at their monthly meetings and their monthly events.
If you haven’t made it out to the meetings or events (or have for that matter) and want to know what they’re all about – I had the opportunity to interview one of the co-founders, Holli McPherson about her take on the group, the recent announcement on the GR chapter’s expansion and the next craft beer loving event this month.
GrabGR: What has been the most rewarding part of co-leading Girls Pint out?
Holli: Seeing the craft beer educational growth and the community it has built in women of the group.
GrabGR: How do you feel about the growth of the GR chapter and the GPO West Michigan expansion that’s happening?
Holli: We are so excited! Myself, Casey (co-founder) and Joanna (a new co-head) will be the leadership team for the chapter heads of Holland and Grand Haven/Muskegon. This growth was a no brainer since these cities have an amazing craft beer scene already! We took on Joanna to help since now we will split our time between all three cities. We are in the process of interviewing for a Holland head but still looking for an interested party for the Grand Haven/Muskegon head. This will also allow us to have joint events with these lakeshore cities!
GrabGR: When holding events, what do you research/try to look for when deciding what to do?
Holli: We try to look for two things – events that have not been done before, are creative or educational and will draw an interest, and how it will give back to the community and encourage growth of all parties. We really try to support local business; especially ones that are women owned and starting up.
GrabGR: What are you most excited for the first co-ed event this month, Prom 2016: Hoppily Ever After held at Bar Divani in downtown GR?
Holli: We are excited because it’s PROM! A lot of people are coming with just their girlfriends, a hot date or calling it their prom re-do. Tickets are on sale now and include (1) free drink, a dessert bar, snack bar, prom photos, a DJ and the chance to win King or Queen! The crowning will be decided by a raffle, each ticket costs $1 and you can nominate yourself or someone else as many times as you’d like! There are prizes for 1st runner ups, King and Queen. All prizes were donated by local breweries and businesses. It is in 2 weeks and we can’t wait to see everyone!
GrabGR: For prospective members or women interested in the joining the group, what would you tell them?
Holli: We LOVE new members! Girls Pint Out is a safe fun place to come learn about beer and meet new women. There is no membership fee or sponsorship required. I love seeing how women will come without knowing anyone and leave with new friends. It’s a fun place to get away for a few hours a month. If you’re interested, like the Grand Rapids Girls Pint Out Facebook group or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The reason Casey and I started the GPO GR chapter is because we saw a need for women focused education, community and events within the craft beer industry. Before I meet her, I would feel alone in my thirst for craft beer knowledge. This group has an outlet for everyone. Someone who is looking for a festival buddy, brewery tours and education, meeting new people, trying beer and of course – fun!
This group has such an amazing environment an feel good atmosphere. And why not get together with some awesome women and enjoy the fruit of Beer City (even if you’re only in it for the beer).
There are still spots left for the event this month, so please check it out – you can purchase tickets here. Keep up to date on all things GPO GR on twitter (GrandRapidsGPO), Instagram (gpo_grandrapids) and Facebook.
As always, #GrabGR on all of your craft beer adventures!
